Introduction: A limited diet in childhood manifests as a preference for a reduced repertoire or low consumption of some foods. Failure to consume healthy foods can compromise nutritional status and contribute to nutritional deficiencies, underweight, and stressful episodes between children and their caregivers. Objective: To identify foods not consumed by girls and boys from different municipalities in Jalisco, Mexico, based on information reported by their mothers. Material and method: Exploratory, cross-sectional study. The sample was non-probabilistic for convenience, consisting of 200 mothers of children aged 2 to 8 years who voluntarily completed an ad hoc online questionnaire. Results: The food group with the highest frequency of non-consumption was vegetables, followed by egg, meat, and fish. The specific foods with the highest frequency of non-consumption were chickpeas, cauliflower, squash, and tuna. Conclusion: A consistent pattern of non-consumption of certain foods in children’s diets was identified, particularly vegetables and legumes, suggesting limited dietary diversity. These findings highlight the need for targeted nutritional and behavioral interventions to improve the acceptance of foods with high nutritional value.
