Food insecurity (FI) affects quality of life and has an impact on their academic performance and well-being. Several studies have linked FI to a low socioeconomic status (SES), as it shapes eating habits and alters consumption patterns, limiting access to nutritious foods. The objective of this study was to assess the degree of FI and SES among students at the Ciudad Universitaria Campus of the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez. A cross-sectional study with correlational analysis was conducted among 289 students. Two instruments were applied: the AMAI questionnaire to classify SES and the U.S. Household Food Security/Hunger Survey Module to determine FI. Results showed that 56.4% of students had a high or medium-high SES, 5.88% had a low or very low SES, and 0.35% lived in extreme poverty. Regarding FI, 58.48% had food security, while 41.52% experienced some degree of FI: 17.99% mild, 12.46% moderate, and 11.07% severe. A significant association was identified between low SES and FI (p<0.05). The high prevalence of FI highlights the need to implement interventions to improve access to healthy foods, considering SES as a key factor to promote students’ well-being and academic performance.
