Abstract

Sarcopenia, characterized by the loss of muscle mass, is a growing problem associated with global aging. Omega-3 fatty acids, known for their anti-inflammatory properties and benefits to cardiovascular and brain health, show potential in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia, promoting muscle mass increase and reducing insulin resistance. Various studies suggest that omega-3 supplementation can significantly improve muscle strength and functionality in older adults, although its impact on lean tissue mass increase is not uniform. Some research also highlights the benefits of krill oil and formulas combining omega-3 with other nutrients, such as leucine and probiotics. However, the effectiveness of these supplements may vary according to individual factors like health status and overall diet. Although there is positive evidence on the benefits of omega-3 in improving muscle mass and function, more research is needed to fully understand these mechanisms. It is suggested that combining omega-3 with physical exercise, particularly resistance training, could be an effective strategy against sarcopenia in older adults.
