Introduction: A Home-packed lunch must contain 15% of the total caloric value, including fruits or vegetables, prepared food, and water, according to the guidelines in Mexico. However, some schools issue internal regulations that do not meet the guidelines or nutritional recommendations. Objective: to compare the nutrient content and type of food in preschool home-packed lunches from two different internal regulations. In addition, determine if they meet the guidelines proposed in 2010 and 2014. Materials and methods: snacks were evaluated under two regulations: Healthy Food Regulation (RAS), which only includes fruits and vegetables, and free choice regulation (RLE). The lunches were compared regarding their nutritional content and the type of food with the guidelines (SS-SEP/2010 and 2014). Results: Home-packed lunches contributed 6.5% and 22.9% of the energy in RAS and RLE, respectively. Vitamin C content exceeded the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) (144%) in RAS, but was deficient in other micronutrients. In RLE, sodium was high (39.9% RDI). Only 5.1% of all snacks were considered healthy according to SS/SEP-2010 guidelines, but not under SS/SEP 2014. Conclusions: It is necessary to involve health professionals in implementing nutritional regulations.
