Introduction: Inadequate nutrition contributes to the progression of many diseases in older adults, and is also an important factor that favors sarcopenia and frailty. Objective: Determine the prevalence of malnutrition due to deficit in non-institutionalized older adults in Veracruz, Mexico. Material and method: descriptive and cross-sectional study in 105 older adults to whom the Mini Nutritional Assessment questionnaire was applied. The analysis was descriptive with the SPSS 21 statistical program. Results: the prevalence of malnutrition found was 26.67%. Furthermore, being widowed and having a history of chronic illness was significantly associated with malnutrition. Conclusion: the majority of older adults with malnutrition were characterized by having a decrease in calf and brachial circumference, as well as living dependently, consuming low amounts of fruits and vegetables. Early detection of malnutrition and risk of malnutrition facilitates planned interventions.
